Thank the Papist God I’m an American

If my great grandfather x 2 hadn’t left Poland to escape Bismark’s persecution of Catholics I might be living in this backward, shithole of a country today.

Gay rights is emerging as a key campaign theme in the presidential election as the race grows close between Duda, backed by the nationalist conservative ruling party, and Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, who has called for tolerance for gays and lesbians.

Duda, who is 48, told his supporters that his parents’ generation did not struggle to cast off communism only to now accept “an ideology” that he thinks “is even more destructive to the human being.”

The president said that during Poland’s communist era, regimes ensured survival by indoctrinating the youngest generation.

“That was Bolshevism. It was the ideologizing of children,” he said. “Today, there are also attempts to push an ideology on us and our children, but different. It’s totally new, but it is also neo-Bolshevism.”

There’s actually nothing specifically Polish about Duda’s radical homophobia. It’s actually something much worse. The President of a country with over 30 million people and the 6th largest economy in Europe is accusing people who advocate gay rights of “Cultural Bolshevism.” In other words, he’s an old school Nazi cloaking his antisemitism behind an argument for persecuting an even more vulnerable minority. He’s making more or less the same argument Władysław Gomułka did in 1968 when Poland expelled the last of its Jewish intelligensia, trying to divert social discontent into right wing conspiracy theories.

I’m no fan of the Civic Forum Party. They’re basically a gang of neoliberal assholes. But by all means if you live in Poland vote for Rafal Trzaskowski. That’s my official endorsement as a Polish American communist.

A woman has a hysterectomy, she goes home “deflowered” and no longer a “woman”. Crying all night, she has a dream, I could be more masculine, if I’m not a woman, anymore. She shops for a black leather jacket, gets a short haircut, goes shopping for a Harley…Who says “genders are forever”? You could just …let go!!!! and who the hell cares anyway, it’s my damn life and now I’m James Dean…

When my father’s great grandparents came to the United States, Poland was Germany, or at least part of it was. Their immigration records actually read “Kingdom of Prussia” or “North German Confederation.” And back then Polish nationalism was progressive.

In any event, Andrzej Duda is a buffoon and a puppet of Jarosław Kaczyński but he does have the virtue of being shockingly clear about the ideology behind Polish homophobia.

American evangelicals have a very similar ideology. They talk about the “Hollywood elites conspiring against family values.” These days many of them simply drop the dog whistle altogether.

I’m not sure if the far right’s attempt to bring homophobia into the ideological nexus of classical antisemitism is new or not. But this is the first time I’ve heard it expressed so brazenly and unambiguously. I suppose there are issues with the translation and the Polish right will try to backpedal and argue this is a western conspiracy to make them look bad but honestly there’s not much room for ambiguity here.

you are right. And there are concerns in Germany, too, about forming new political movements that openly are racist and homophobe. But at least, the majority of Germans still remember the atrocitiess caused by the nation (with the help of many a Polish and Austrian – where I come from). And fight the beginnings. In Poland, it becomes institutionalised. My hope rests with the Polish females to turn out in throves to vote and change the course of policies.

The PiS is really coming out of the closet now. They’re suggesting that Trzaskowski is in the pay of the Jews and George Soros. Sadly, even if Trzaskowski does win, all he really is is a Polish version of Macron.

Jewish former property owners and their descendants have been campaigning for compensation since the fall of communism in 1989. But the nationalist ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) says Poland itself was also a victim of Nazi Germany and that it is for Berlin to compensate former Polish Jews.

The prime time news show on state-owned TVP suggested on Sunday that Trzaskowski, presidential candidate of the centrist Civic Platform (PO), would use public money to compensate Jews for their losses and fail to defend national interests if he beat the incumbent, Andrzej Duda, in the June 28 vote.

President Duda is close to PiS.

TVP quoted a 2015 interview with Trzaskowski saying Poland “needs to talk with Jewish communities and try to solve this problem (of property restitution)”. It also suggested Trzaskowski’s “thinking is not based on Polish interests”.

Previously, the show has said Trzaskowski has close ties to George Soros, the billionaire financier who supports liberal causes in eastern Europe.

Think of the good side here. The ‘United Right’ party has definitely made enemies with Russia across the board. Also, the full gamut of liberal and progressive opinion. The entire political left. Germany, the Jews, Orthodox, Roma and so forth. Fencing themselves in very nicely. Not a big future here. Maybe Steve Bannon will be your new friend. But, I think you’re heading for the tip.
