A gay Egyptian communist who was arrested and tortured in prison for waiving a rainbow flag at a concert. She committed suicide in Canada at the age of 30. This is what happens in a conservative country when you step out of line. Personally I can’t imagine what it’s like. Spending 3 days in NYC’s central booking during Occupy traumatized me. Involuntary confinement is really something you never get over. You realize “someone can put me in a cage and there’s nothing I can do about it.” It completely destroys your confidence in the world.
“To my siblings – I tried to find redemption and failed, forgive me. To my friends – the experience was harsh and I am too weak to resist it, forgive me. To the world – you were cruel to a great extent, but I forgive,” she wrote in her final letter.
The state exacts a heavy price from those who resist. Sadly, for this comrade that price was more than she could bear.
The Toronto based group she had joined ‘Spring Socialist Network’ is a new player in town. Has fraternal relations of sort with Hammerhearts. Both stand in the Trotskyist tradition. So at least she wasn’t hanging around with fake-leftists like the NDP.
